VFA-103, known as the "Jolly Rogers," was established in 1952 and was originally known as the “Sluggers”. The Sluggers became the Jolly Rogers following the disestablishment of VF-84 (1995), and subsequently adopted the famous white skull-and-crossbones.  With the retirement of the F-14 Tomcat, in 2004 it transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet and was redesignated as VFA-103.

The squadron has a reputation for excellence in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, having served with distinction in numerous operations, including in the Middle East during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia, VFA-103 continues to be a key component of the Navy’s carrier air wings, upholding the "Jolly Rogers" legacy as one of the most respected and formidable units in naval aviation.
